How to set your desk height — sitting or standing
The right standing desk height is not one universal number. It depends on your body, the shoes you wear, the chair you use and the work you are doing. A chart can give you a starting range, but your elbows and shoulders provide the more useful final check.
Use this method with any height-adjustable standing desk. It takes about a minute, and once you save the result the desk can return to it every day.
Find your standing desk height with the elbow rule
- Stand naturally with your weight balanced and shoulders relaxed.
- Bend your elbows to roughly 90 degrees.
- Raise or lower the desktop until the keyboard surface sits at, or slightly below, elbow height.
- Type for a minute and watch your shoulders and wrists.
If your shoulders lift toward your ears, the desktop is too high. If you round your upper back or reach down, it is too low. Your forearms should approach the work surface without pressure at the wrists.
Set sitting height separately
Sitting and standing heights are two different settings. Sit with your feet supported, knees comfortable and back in a neutral position. Then repeat the elbow check instead of assuming the standing measurement will translate directly.
Save both positions if your desk has memory controls. The smart standing desk stores three favorite heights, while the ergonomic standing desk, solid white oak standing desk and solid black walnut standing desk each provide four saved positions.
Set the monitor after the desktop
Desk height serves your arms; monitor height serves your neck. Once the desktop feels right, position the display about an arm's length away with the upper part of the screen around eye level. Exact placement can shift with screen size, glasses and viewing distance, so use a position that lets you read without lifting or dropping your chin.
A laptop screen and keyboard cannot both sit in ideal positions at the same time. If the laptop is your main computer, an adjustable laptop stand is useful for docking and storage, while an external display or raised open-laptop setup should be paired with a separate keyboard and mouse. A gas-spring monitor arm gives a desktop monitor independent height and distance adjustment.
Check the height for different tasks
Typing is the best baseline, but not every task needs the same surface height. Writing by hand may feel better slightly higher, while drawing or detailed craft work may need a different angle. Use spare memory positions for the tasks you repeat rather than forcing one setting to cover the entire day.
Change positions instead of chasing one perfect posture
A standing desk is most useful as a movement tool. Alternate between sitting and standing before either position becomes tiring. Start with short standing periods, keep your weight balanced and change position when you notice leaning, locked knees or shoulder tension.
Quick standing desk height checklist
- Shoulders remain relaxed while typing.
- Elbows stay near a right angle without reaching.
- Wrists remain neutral rather than bent upward.
- The screen can be read without craning the neck.
- Both sitting and standing positions are saved separately.
